I actually had a conversation with Mr "My group can complete a turn in 2 minutes" on RUclips comments. He posted in praise of high level D&D play. I commented that my experience above level 10 was 30 minute combat turns and 30 minutes to play 6 seconds is bad for immersion. He responded that his level 18 games never take more than 2 minutes per turn. So I checked his live stream. Play was below level 18, and the first player in combat took 10 minutes for their round. I don't think the guy was deliberately dishonest. I do think there's a mass of time blindness for game players.

Agree totally on expansions. Much like movie sequels, they're too often easy money - low effort attempts to cash in on a successful title. Also like movies, there are a few exceptions.

I think "Voyages" may be a reskin of a solo PnP called "Space Explorer" by Sid Sackson. You use the same method of travel (but with playing cards simulating dice rolls) to blast off from Earth, visit each planet of the solar system, then get back to Earth without running out of fuel.

What a fabulous selection of little games.

I can't deny that "fun density" is a nice board game metric. It got me thinking (yet again) about ways to evaluate the "value" of a game. I've seen many people use a price-per-play or price-per-hour-of-play metric, where hardcore adherents tend to aim for less than $1/play. (Gloomhaven is doing quite well on this metric for me.) Fun density is primarily a concern for gamers with less storage and price ratios are primarily a concern for those with smaller discretionary budgets. Of course both space and money are limited resources and there's nothing wrong with being conscious of one or both. I'm curious what other metrics players use to evaluate their games (apart from the obvious x out of y rating). What metrics do you use?

Shoutouts to Sid Sackson. The man was designing board games back in the 70's and he pioneered a lot of the principles in this very video. His masterpiece "Acquire" is getting a reprint soon. Highly recommended.

No one ever asked to randomly play a game. However, I made it happen once. I was in a 3h queue and we didn't know how to entertain ourselves anymore so I said "maaan I'd play some love letter right now..." And my friends agreed. So I just opened my bag and we started playing. We even made a new friend there Always have a mini-game and bring it with you. If you take a train you don't know when you go nor when you'll arrive

Ticket to Ride Europe, Carcassonne, Catan, Pandemic are 4 of the absolute classics. I always grab one of those to get people into gaming. New York Zoo is sneaky good too.

Great video! Quite a few games I already played before, but also some new ones I never heard of before and am definitely interested in! Surprised there wasn't a Tiny Epic game included though, I am always surprised how much game they can fit into a small box. Same goes for the games of publisher Jolly Dutch, they are often shorter than the tiny epic games from Gamelyn, but are always packed to the brim and have amazing artwork!

I know you touched on this but I think a lot had to do with not pushing out enough videos- I think that’s important in maintaining viewership. I hope it gets better as I enjoy your videos.

Have you considered offering a tier below $5? I've clicked on your Patreon before, with the intent to pledge, but the lowest tier being $5 just feels a tad much. I'm not trying to say that your work is not worth $5 - on the contrary, I appreciate the concise format, great production quality, and your informative takes on games. But I like supporting multiple creators, and I am not too interested in a bunch of the extra content (having limited time for such stuff myself), so overall I am just not up for spending $5. Maybe, with a $1 or $2 tier (with fewer rewards), you could catch people like me, who are more "tangentially interested" but would be happy to throw a buck into the hat? Actually, I assume you have indeed considered the option and decided against it, so here's a data point of a person who would pledge at a lower level. :) Good luck, hope it works out and you can continue making videos! Edit: Now I see in some other comments that there is a manual way to pledge lower amounts. I use Patreon for multiple creators and even have the app installed, but I have never even heard of this option. I don't think people know about this. Also, don't underestimate just how lazy people are. Plus, offering a small reward might be a nice incentive (I personally don't care much but I think other people do).

Hello there. I’m recently getting into some modern board games and am delving into many many RUclips videos online. I’ve been watching a lot of yours and enjoy how you explain things. My partner is most likely the person I’ll play with the most, but I expect these lists can be fairly subjective based on your personalities and relationship dynamics, but would you say this list is the shared opinion of both of you or what you personally prefer to play her at? It would be interesting to get your partners perspective on what she prefers 😊

I don’t think it’s just you, I see a LOT of board game channels now, struggling for views. Someone mentioned oversaturated in another comment but I have also seen this trend on RUclips over the last decade: slow build to great success and then steadily dropping viewing figures after that. I think folks are a bit fickle, they are into something big time for 6 months and then move onto something new (I see the brothers Murph don’t get the viewing figures they have previously.). I know none of this helps you but I’d be wary about constantly asking what the public wanna see, I think they won’t stick with you, even with this approach 🤷‍♂️

I watched your Shoebox Games video and thought that it had both too much and too little info all at once. By that I mean, there were so many games presented, with lots of clever writing, jokes, etc., but not enough info about actual game play to make me take real interest in any single game, let alone a box full. I know it's a hard balance to strike... I think maybe a SERIES on "shoebox games", where you can give better attention to each game would be better. Just my 2 cents. :)

I think for me - it’s playing a game at a friends, enjoying it, buying it myself and then never playing it because my other friends aren’t interested and the one that is oreads owns the game themselves 🤣
